چکیده

A two-level optimization procedure for determining elastic constants E1, E2, G12, and n12 of laminated composite materials using measured axial and lateral strains of two symmetric angle-ply beams with different fiber angles subjected to three-point-bending testing is presented. In the first-level optimization process, the theoretically and experimentally predicted axial and lateral strains of a [(451/ 451)6]s beam are used to construct the strain discrepancy function which is a measure of the sum of the squared differences between the experimental and theoretical predictions of the axial and lateral strains. The identification of the material constants is then formulated as a constrained minimization problem in which the best estimates of shear modulus and Poisson’s ratio of the beam are determined to make the strain discrepancy function a global minimum. In the second-level optimization process, shear modulus and Poisson’s ratio determined in the first level of optimization are kept constant and Young’s moduli of the second angle-ply beam with fiber angles different from 451 are identified by minimizing the strain discrepancy function established at this level of optimization. The suitability of the proposed procedure for material characterization of composite materials has been demonstrated by means of a number of examples. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Buckling and vibration analysis of angle -ply symmetric laminated composite plates with fully elastic boundaries

The main focus of this paper is on efficiency analysis of two kinds of approximating functions (characteristic orthogonal polynomials and characteristic beam functions) that have been applied in the Rayleigh-Ritz method to determine the non-dimensional buckling and frequency parameters of an angle ply symmetric laminated composite plate with fully elastic boundaries. It has been observed that o...

Multiscale Analysis of Transverse Cracking in Cross-Ply Laminated Beams Using the Layerwise Theory

A finite element model based on the layerwise theory is developed for the analysis of transverse cracking in cross-ply laminated beams. The numerical model is developed using the layerwise theory of Reddy, and the von Kármán type nonlinear strain field is adopted to accommodate the moderately large rotations of the beam. The finite element beam model is verified by comparing the present numeric...

A Numerical and Analytical Solution for the Free Vibration of Laminated Composites Using Different Plate Theories

An analytical and numerical solution for the free vibration of laminated polymeric composite plates with different layups is studied in this paper. The governing equations of the laminated composite plates are derived from the classical laminated plate theory (CLPT) and the first-order shear deformation plate theory (FSDT). General layups are evaluated by the assumption of cross-ply and angle-p...

Analysis and design of pultruded FRP shapes under bending

A comprehensive approach for the analysis and design of pultruded FRP beams in bending is presented. It is shown that the material architecture of pultruded FRP shapes can be efficiently modeled as a layered system. Based on the information provided by the material producers, a detailed procedure is preserited for the computation of fiber volume fraction (V r) of the constituents, including fib...

Probabilistic Failure Analysis of Composite Beams for Optimum Ply Arrangements under Ballistic Impact

The probabilistic analysis takes into consideration an effect of scatter in elastic and strength properties of composite beam, and velocity of impactor. The damage model is implemented in the FE (finite element) code by a VUMAT (user-defined subroutine). The inter ply failure is modeled using cohesive surfaces between the plies. Dynamic response is obtained using explicit time domain integratio...
